Expanding access to the WIC program is a priority for the Alliance.  WIC not only supplies supplemental foods high in nutritional value, the program also provides caregivers other important components including nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and health referrals. Did you know that mothers aren’t the only people who qualify for WIC? The name alone implies it’s a program just for women or children. Thankfully, that is not the case. Fathers, grandparents, and foster families are also eligible to apply if they are caring for a child under age five.

We recognize there are obstacles to access WIC in Arkansas. We’ve been working with WIC administrators and policy makers to facilitate easier access for those who qualify. In fact, Arkansas has already begun implementing online WIC access, which once complete, will be a significant improvement. Additionally, the Arkansas Department of Health is working to ensure culturally appropriate foods are added to the lists of foods available for WIC recipients.

“WIC is such an amazing resource for families. It’s way more than simply the foods a participant receives,” said Cathy May Director of SNAP & WIC Outreach with the Alliance. “It’s the support from healthcare workers, lactation specialists and a wonderful support network. A young mother might not have family to support her, WIC can be that. A father might be lost with new responsibilities, WIC can help with ideas and plans.”

You can help our WIC outreach efforts. Make sure all caregivers you know learn about the WIC program. Information about WIC can be obtained from any local county health unit between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
