Walmart Foundation awards Alliance $57k for sub-grants to Arkansas nonprofits

The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance received a grant from the Walmart Foundation, and $57,000 in sub-grants will be awarded to members. The grant funds for the Emergency Food Relief Grant are to be distributed to non-profit organizations throughout Arkansas and support local hunger relief organizations in the state as they fight hunger during the unprecedented conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. These grants will be used to distribute unrestricted resources to food pantries and feeding programs that are able to continue serving, but with limited resources and staff.

The 2020 Emergency Food Relief program will provide necessary supplies to increase travel for staff to administer SNAP relief statewide, add additional staff on a temporary basis, staff the call-in line, and expand work with DHS targeting some of our most vulnerable population, at risk for food insecurity or hunger.  In addition, it will fund the work and travel needed to assist school districts and non-profits statewide with navigating the USDA and FNS waivers and get their nutrition programs up and running.

Organizations can apply for up to $1,500 — or up to $3,000 in a dire emergency — and can be used for emergency food relief, emergency operation fund relief, capacity building items, and more. The organizations that qualify for the grant are defined as food pantries, food rescue organizations, soup kitchens, shelters and other organizations that serve Arkansas families directly: either by providing food prepared on site — such as a summer feeding site — or for personal use at home — for example, a food pantry. Non-profit organizations that are not current Alliance members are eligible to join and apply for the grant.
